One word uses 12 keys from the left side of the keyboard.
What's the longest word typed with only the left hand?
A funny thing happens when you try to get a definitive answer.
The answer is "stewardesses."
It's the longest word that can be typed using only the "left hand" keys on a standard keyboard. Or at least, that's the answer people usually give to this puzzle. (Technically, the word "reverberated" is just as long, and so is "desegregated" - but they're sometimes disqualified because they require using the past tense.)
But doing some research reveals there's one word that's even longer than the 12-letter word "stewardesses" -- and there's also nearly 2,000 shorter words that can typed with only the left hand.
There's 927 words with 7 letters (according to a computer search), and 497 more with 8 letters. There's even 208 with 9 letters, 85 with 10 letters, and 26 with 11. And... there's also one word with 13 letters (depending on how strictly you want to define "word.") So the next time someone tries to tell you that "stewardesses" is the longest word typed with only the left hand, you can laugh in their face.
And then see if they can tell you the longest word spelled in alphabetical order. :)
(Or English words that don't rhyme with anything.)
great passwords for porn sites ;P
My 12 year old son had to explain that to me. I didn't get it, but now I do. Gross.
BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! That was the greatest post I've seen all week!! Good work Joules!
LOL. Here's a few appropriate options:
Devertebrated, sounds like what happened to the Democratic caucus when they decided to leave Joementum in his post.
Hope so.
That's odd, I could have sworn it was "ooooooooooooooooohbabymmmmmmmmmmmohyeahooooohUNNNNNGH!"
:-)
Um, what about "sweaterdresses"?
# perl -e 'while(<>){next unless /^[qwertasdfgzxcvb]{13,}$/;print}' < /usr/share/dict/words
aftercataract
devertebrated
redrawerredrawers
tesseradecade
But redrawerredawers is not a valid response. I like devertebrated; it sounds like something out of a zombie movie.
There are many places in the article where "there're" (or, better yet, "there are") should have been used instead of "there's". E.g., There are 927 words with 7 letters (according to a computer search), and 497 more with 8 letters.
sweaterdresses is all left handed and14 letters long.
So there--Hah
I think you'll find that stewardessessweaterdresses is even longer.
Or dressstewardessessweaterdress (a sweaterdress that belongs to a sterwardes that dresses you). Or does this not make sense?
Aw... too bad that the photo used in the article precisely depicts a right hand.
And not to be a party pooper, but what prevents you from using all the keys with just the left hand? In fact, I wrote this comment using only my right hand since my left is holding a granola bar.
I know, I know, that's not the point, but still...
The double-tall key visible on the keyboard suggests that you are viewing the keyboard from the right side... it looks like that finger is pressing the inboard enter key.
if we take a clue from the keyboard, we'll notice that there is a long key at the bottom corner, likely the 'enter' key of a numeric keypad. flipping the image to match that would make one believe that it is a right hand, but it could still be either as most hands tend to cast shadows. i don't see any shadow on the keys--it could be any hand in any orientation. $.02
You're absolutely right! I pointed that out on another forum, and after someone else replied later that it clearly showed a left hand, I took a closer look at the picture...
There is indeed a long key on the side you're looking at... and that is the enter key on the *right* side of a keyboard!
Also look at the shade between the keys, a few keys from the side of the keyboard. It is caused by some extra space between the keys. If you look at the distance from that shade to the side of the keyboard, you'll see it's all the same for the top row (supposedly the function keys), the second and third row... Further down, the finger makes it hard to see more. Anyways, for as far as we can see, the shade runs down in a straight line.
Now look at the left side of your (any!) keyboard, and at the right side of your keyboard, and decide where you could see straight lines like those...
Furthermore, <a href="">this is the original photograph</a>, supposedly accidently reversed and then re-reversed, that clearly shows a RIGHT hand on the RIGHT hand side of the keyboard anyways.
MoeZilla, cut the crap and fess up!
Bah... Newsvine strips links! It is

I read the headline, giggled and clicked as fast as I could to make a left hand use only joke - and everyone had beaten me to it! Damn you all - suck all my perverted fun out of the night, whydontcha?
;)
I guess because I'm using a different dictionary (/usr/share/dict/american) I get a different answer. The word 'extraterrestrials' is 17 letters long and beats all the previously mentioned words. Is this an "American" only word?
there's an 'i' in 'extraterrestrials,' which disqualifies it.
sorry, "i" and "l" are disqualified
sorry, "i" and "l" are disqualified
@Roux:
the word extraterrestrials looks good at first, but it's got "i" and "l" in it which are both right-side words

I used the "yawl" word list.
So... desegregated and reverberated are sometimes disqualified because they're "using the past tense" and stewardesses not so, even though it uses the plural? That's pretty darned arbitrary. What moron made up that rule? Someone with a thing for female flight attendants?
I put my money on sweaterdresses.
If I had a choice between past tense reverberated and plural stewardesses, I'd pick stewardesses every tiime.
I like
egrep [qwertasdfgzxcvb]{12} /usr/share/dict/words | egrep -v [yuiophjklnm]
as the answer. (Others may be better faster or shorter, but this is the one I like)
null
Extraterrestres is 15 letters. It's not english, but it is in fact a word. All left handed.
Desegregates or desegregated are both the same length as stewardesses, but I agree sweaterdresses is the longest.
Um, what about "infinity" using keys 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (6 is a toss up L/R key for my fingers)? Depending on memory management, the string can be parsed as a word... or are is the caveat papirus and ink plumes?
Ridiculous. The longest word typed with the left hand is the same as the longest word typed with both hands. Just put your right hand behind your back and hunt-and-peck. Don't let the Home Row Mafia segregate your key presses! ;-)
Home Row Mafia, here. ;-) Hah — according to my version of linux.words (which is admittedly a bit old), the longest words you can using only the left hand in Dvorak are 'opaque' and 'upkeep', and note that there are no words that can be typed using only the right hand. Okay, maybe so I wouldn't try to force it on anyone, but I'm glad I was coaxed into learning it. :-)
How about if you did it with Dvorak ?
Look, jump, join, moon, mink - are all right hand only words.
If one programmed the function keys F1 -F4 to display a word when pressed with the left hand, then the length is determined only by the longest word ever.
Maybe I'm an idiot, but which one is the 13-letter word referred to in the article?
I'm typing this whole comment with my left hand. It isn't very efficient or quick, but it's all left-handed. :)
I'm not English speaking. Please tell me the whole post was not about the fscking dot key
