"Dinosaur Comics" made a strange real-world appearance Saturday -- in the tubas of Stanford's marching band.
They'd been invited to perform in a "Battle of the Bands" event at the Davis campus of the University of California. But stretched over the mouth of each tuba was a panel for the band's own version of the sardonic web comic strip.
Mimicking the strip's overenthusiastic Tyrannosaur Rex, the dialogue in the band's comic seemed to be cheering Saturday's "Picnic Day" event for prospective freshmen.
"Davis Picnic Day is awesome!"
But gradually, the conversation became more and more ironic.
"It's the only day in America that's all about Davis."
"Could it get any more self-indulgent?"
And soon their comments had devolved into jokes about how it's so unpredictable in its predictibility, since nothing happens outside the control of U.C. Davis administrators. Its final conclusion?
"But that Stanford Band is awesome."
